Labor Induction / Labor Preparation Massage
Labor Induction /Labor Preparation Massage is massage given to prepare a mother's body for labor. No matter what your birth plan is, having a long thorough massage is the best way to prepare your body for a more comfortable birth experience. Shelly offers a 2 hour + 15 min Induction Massage session to thoroughly relax the mother's body. Particular attention is paid to open up the muscles in the low back, hips and legs. Additional techniques are offered to stimulate labor when requested. Being relaxed is the most important step for labor preparation. If your body or mind are anxious and tight your child will respond and stay put. A relaxed body sends a message to baby, it's ok to come out into the world. Shelly offers guided meditations and energy work which assist with labor starting if requested. Induction massage will always prepare you for labor but there is no guarantee it will induce labor right away. Many women do go into labor within 24 - 48 hours after an induction massage, however each pregnancy is different and each baby is on their own time schedule. If a doctor has told you they will induce labor after a certain date please do not plan your induction massage the day before. Give yourself 3-5 days before a planned hospital induction, to allow the process to work naturally and to take the mental pressure off that you must have your baby by a certain date or else. The anxiety about having your baby by a certain date frequently prevents you from relaxing enough to go into natural labor. Labor created through massage induction produces natural contractions. This is a soft contrast compared to the intense contractions created through induction drugs. Drug induced contractions can be very, very painful and are not supportive for mother and child. It is ideal to receive massages throughout the pregnancy and add Induction Labor Massage for your last session before labor for best results.

Prenatal Massage
Prenatal massage can be safely given after the first trimester. As a woman's body expands and makes room for the baby she can experience muscle and ligament tension through out her body. Shelly is very experienced at working with pregnant moms relieving their muscle tension, pain and swelling as well as lending emotional support. Shelly has taken advanced training in supporting pregnant women and their growing babies through a Doula apprenticeship program. She continually strives to offer the best care possible for her pregnancy clients. Shelly can safely administer a firm pressure for your prenatal massage without inducing labor. Receiving prenatal massage throughout pregnancy increases oxygen to the baby, improves the health of both the baby and mother, reduces labor time, and decreases complications at birth. Pregnant mothers who receive regular prenatal massages, walk regularly, practice prenatal yoga, or meditate frequently often have significantly shorter and more comfortable labors. Giving the gift of prenatal massage is a great way to support both mother and child.

Postpartum Support Massage
After giving birth and beginning the adjustment period to a new routine and a whole new life, many new moms are long over due for a thorough massage. It's great to start that support right away. It is perfectly safe to come in for a Postpartum Massage the week following labor to ease physical tension in the back, shoulders, hips and legs as well as receiving emotional support. Once bleeding has completely subsided, usually a few days to a few weeks, abdominal massage can be administered. Abdominal massages are one of Shelly's specialties. Frequently your precious little one, during the pregnancy, rested, kicked and pushed on digestive organs, diaphragm muscle and muscles in the lower abdomen and hips. There may have also been constipation throughout or during the last part of your pregnancy. An abdominal massage is a great way to gently ease organs and muscles back into place, restoring digestion and opening up breath in the belly. Beginning life with a new baby and potential ongoing lack of sleep can be very overwhelming. Giving her the gift of a Postpartum Support Massage supports her in nurturing herself and her child.
Chi Nei Tsang Abdominal Massage
Chi Nei Tsang is Qi Gung applied to abdominal massage.
During the sessions you are guided with breath work to open up blockages and let go of abdominal
tension. The muscles in the abdomen and the internal organs are massaged through the belly. Techniques can involve shaking or gently tapping over liver, colon, small intestine, kidneys and stomach region. Chi Nei Tsang can facilitate release of tightness in the diaphragm or lower abdominal muscles. Chi Nei Tsang sessions can also include Healing Sounds and Qi energy healing for each organ. Clients find Chi Nei Tsang to be very beneficial for digestive discomforts such as constipation and IBS but can also assist with emotional and stress release. Frequently we go through life holding our breath when stressed, or ignoring our abdominal region. Chi Nei Tsang helps you get back into touch with your belly, helps you breath more fully, helps you develop awareness of when and where you hold stress in your belly. Shelly also has 24 years as a Natural Therapeutic Specialist to help you identify foods and products that may be aggravating digestion. She is passionate about educating you on foods, herbs, and supplements that support comfortable, healthy, productive digestion. Chi Nei Tsang is very nurturing and the techniques are not painful, however it is normal to feel a little sore the following day as if you did a round of sit ups or attended a Pilates class. Soreness does not follow every session but does seem to occur if the recipient has never received abdominal work or vigorously exercised their belly recently. It is recommended you do not eat for two to three hours before your session and do not drink a lot of liquid 30 minutes prior. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing.
Shelly started abdominal massage training in 1997 at the New Mexico School of Natural Therapeutics in Albuquerque, NM. She practiced Colon Hydrotherapy in Naturopathic Physicians' offices and integrated health settings from 1997-2005. She began Chi Nei Tsang studies in 2001 with Aleksandra Bazinska and Kathella Robinson, teaching students of Gilles Marin, director of the Chi Nei Tsang Institute in Berkley, CA. She continued her Chi Tsang studies in Austin in 2008, with Shanti Dechen of Aroma Apothecary Healing Arts Academy, and Jampa Mackenzie Stewart of Healing Tao Institute.
